Gymnastics fans can enjoy free Webcast of 2007 Visa Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Aug. 21, 2007 – Beginning at 4 p.m. ET today, fans can enjoy the excitement and drama of the junior men’s and women’s competitions at the 2007 Visa Championships via a free Webcast at www.usa-gymnastics.org.  The senior competition for men and women will be available on Sept. 10. The Visa Championships is USA Gymnastics’ national championships where the U.S. champions are determined.

The Webcast, a first for the Visa Championships, is post-produced, which makes it easier and more enjoyable for viewing. Coverage of the U.S. Classic is already archived on the site.

The 2007 Visa Championships concluded on Aug. 18 and was held in San Jose, Calif.  Rebecca Bross of Plano, Texas, won the U.S. women’s junior all-around crown, and Alexy Bilozertchev of Hilliard, Ohio, and John Orozco of Bronx, N.Y., won the junior men’s 16-18 year-old and 14-15 year-old all-around titles, respectively.  For complete results of the junior competition, as well as all of the events at the Visa Championships, log on to www.usa-gymnastics.org.

On behalf of USA Gymnastics, thank you for your support and enthusiasm that made the 2007 Visa Championships such a successful event. The city of San Jose and the state of California proved to be wonderful hosts and a great fan base for the sport of Gymnastics. We all hope that you enjoyed watching David Durante and Shawn Johnson as they were crowned this year’s National Champions. These great athletes now turn their attention to the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany starting September 1. Don’t forget to tune in to NBC for broadcasts of both the World Championships and the Men’s Finals at the Visa Championships.

Johnson helped the U.S. women win the team gold medal at the 2007 World Championships, which was just the second world team title in U.S. history and the first won at a World Championships held outside of the United States. She also won gold medals in the all-around and floor exercise. It was the first time the USA won both the team and all-around gold medals at the same World Championships.

Johnson named ABC “World News” “Person of the Week”

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Sept. 14, 2007—  2007 world all-around champion Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa, has been selected as ABC “World News’” “Person of the Week” for her accomplishments at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. Johnson also is the 2007 world floor exercise champion and a member of the U.S. Team that won the women's world team title.  She will be profiled on tonight’s broadcast.


Johnson helped the U.S. women win the team gold medal, which is just the second ever for the USA and the first team title won at a World Championships held outside of the United States. Johnson is one of four U.S. women to win the coveted world all-around title, joining Kim Zmeskal (1991), Shannon Miller (1993-94) and Chellsie Memmel (2005). She also won the world floor exercise gold medal.


Every Friday, “World News” features a “Person of the Week,” someone who – for better or worse – has made a difference to the world or the country or a community.  The series was part of the broadcast from 1986 until 1998 and was reintroduced in 2003.  Viewers can submit their suggestions for “Person of the Week” via ABCNEWS.com.

U.S. women, men advance to team finals of 2007 World Championships, qualify for 2008 Olympic Games

The U.S. Women’s and Men’s Teams advanced to the team finals of the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, as well as qualified to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games. The U.S. women finished first in Sunday’s qualification round and the U.S. men finished fourth in today’s qualification round. The U.S. Women’s Team takes on the world tomorrow, Sept. 5, at 8 a.m. ET in the women’s team finals. Joining the United States are Brazil, China, France, Great Britain, Italy, Romania and Russia. The U.S. Men’s Team competes in the team finals on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 8 a.m. ET against China, Germany, Japan, Korea, Romania, Russia, and Spain.
